About Us

In 1973, Cecelia and David Reid, founders of Calypso Tours, rented a private yacht out of the Yacht Club in Puntarenas and went fishing. After fishing all morning and catching nothing, they decided to go exploring and cruised the island studded Gulf of Nicoya. When the captain dropped anchor in the turquoise waters in front of beautiful Tortuga Island they swam ashore and theirs were the only footprints in the white sand. It was at this moment in time that the idea for the now World Famous Island Cruise was born.

It is hard to believe 30 years have passed since Calypso tours took the first Island Cruise to Tortuga Island. Last year David and Cecelia were awarded the Promoter of the Year award, a prestigious and coveted award by all those who work in tourism. It is a great honor to have received this award and a reminder of all the hard work that goes into keeping Calypso operating 365 days a year.

We are always asked what is the secret to our success? It would have to be all our dedicated employees. Personal and extensive training of our 45 employees, has created camaraderie among them plus an ideal working atmosphere and it is why most of our employees have been with the company for more than 10 years. They have been trained to recycle and recognize the importance of working together to help save the planet. We do not use disposable plastic glasses, plates and bottles.

Calypso Cruises is a wonderful One Day Adventure that recognizes that good personal service, a friendly face, a ride on the million dollar catamaran Manta Raya and delicious food (Gourmet Magazine 1991) is all the ingredients necessary to make a day with us the best vacation day in Costa Rica. It is for this reason that most of our passengers save their last day in Costa Rica for a trip with us.

We are the only cruise to offer two different destinations and this gives us the opportunity to educate the public around the world the importance in protecting the remaining 2% of precious Dry Tropical Forest of Tortuga Island and the Private Reserve of Punta Coral for future generations.

Catamaran departs daily from Puntarenas at 9:30 A.M. and returns to dock at 5:00 P.M.
